Founded in 1977, the Lion & Unicorn is one of the few independent booksellers in the U.K dedicated solely to children's books.

Situated on the corner of one of Richmond's picturesque lanes close to Richmond Green, we specialise in quality books and audio tapes for children with a full range of services for personal customers and for schools. We aim for high standards of service, stock knowledge and range, and were voted Independent Bookseller of the Year at the British Book Industry Awards 2000. Sponsored by publishers David & Charles, this is the first time that this coveted award has been won by a children's bookshop.

Over the years we have hosted many memorable events with a galaxy of celebrated authors and illustrators from Roald Dahl (who was our very first guest and opened the Lion & Unicorn in 1977), David McKee and Shirley Hughes to Jacqueline Wilson, Philip Pullman, Anthony Horowitz, Michael Morpurgo and Lauren Child. We continue to hold regular events throughout the year and we support author events in the wider community working in partnership with local schools, Richmond Young People's Library and Arts Richmond.

Our stock is comprehensive, from pint-sized board books for babies to teenage fiction and includes a wide range of non-fiction plus books on audio tape and CD. Known far and wide as a treasure trove and a haven for children's book lovers, customers can enjoy browsing and chatting about books in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere with knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff ready to offer advice and guidance.
